(Newsis)]One of Disney+ Korea’s most ambitious original series for 2025 is set to make its debut, boasting a star-studded cast and the creative minds behind Korean hits like “Misaeng” and “Big Bet.”

The series “Low Life” brings together director Kang Yoon-sung, best known for Disney+’s “Big Bet” and the box office smash “The Outlaws,” with “Misaeng” creator and acclaimed webtoon writer Yoon Tae-ho. Set in 1977, the story follows a group of individuals locked in a fierce battle over a sunken treasure ship.

The project features an impressive lineup, including Disney+ “Moving” star Ryu Seung-ryong and Lim Soo-jung, beloved for K-drama classics such as “I’m Sorry, I Love You” and “Finding Mr. Destiny.” Rounding out the ensemble are TVXQ’s Jung Yun-ho and Lee Dong-hwi, known for “Reply 1988” and “Casino.”

Director Kang noted that working with such a diverse group of performers brought a unique energy to the production.

“This was my first time creating so many characters with such a large cast, each bringing their own unique personalities. I found this approach to drama-making incredibly exciting,” Kang shared at a press conference in Seoul’s Yeouido district on Tuesday.

The characters come to life on screen, each with distinct personalities, circling the treasure like hungry hyenas. According to Kang, the actors played a significant role in shaping their characters during filming.

“Each character carries the essence of the actor portraying them,” Kang explained.

“I set a standard that if a character evolves through an actor’s unique style, we should embrace it. That’s how we approached filming. Since the actors essentially created their characters, I welcomed any departures from my initial vision and allowed for adjustments accordingly,” he elaborated.

“As the actors helped their characters grow with each shoot, I found myself constantly revising the original script. I think I ended up tweaking the dialogue at every turn,” Kang added.

The cast and creators also highlighted their commitment to authentically recreating the 1970s. Lim Soo-jung, who plays Jung-sook – an ambitious woman financing the treasure-hunting group – shared her approach to embracing the era’s fashion.
“I embodied all the glamorous elements a woman of that time could have. From hair and makeup to jewelry, my character wore everything that represented that period. It’s a portrayal that perfectly captures Jung-sook’s essence. We put a lot of effort into getting the visual details just right,” she explained.

Kang added, “Through ‘Low Life,’ I hope to show viewers the fierce way our parents lived in the 1970s and the emotions they carried with them.”

The first three episodes of “Low Life” will premiere on July 16 on Disney+, with two new episodes releasing every Wednesday thereafter.
