Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially registered as a candidate for the presidential election in March.

According to Tass News Agency, Ella Pamfilova, the chairwoman of the Russian Central Election Commission, announced on the 29th (local time) that “it was unanimously decided to register Vladimir Putin as a candidate for the Russian Federation presidential election.”

President Putin is known to have submitted 315,000 voter endorsements on the 22nd to be registered as an independent candidate.

To run as an independent in the Russian presidential election, a candidate must gather endorsements from 300,000 to 315,000 people in more than 40 regions.

The Election Commission announced that 91 (0.15%) out of the signatures submitted by President Putin’s election headquarters were void due to erroneous voter information. However, it stated, “The remaining 314,909 signatures are valid, which is sufficient for candidate registration.”

Earlier, President Putin’s election headquarters announced on the 18th that they had already received over 2 million endorsements nationwide.

The Election Commission plans to finalize the list of candidates by the 10th of next month.

Meanwhile, Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, announced that President Putin will not participate in the presidential candidate debate scheduled for the 16th of next month. President Putin did not participate in pre-election debates in the past.

This year’s Russian presidential election will take place over three days, from March 15 to 17.

If President Putin succeeds in his fifth term, his term, which ends on May 7, will be extended until 2030.
