Mercedes-Benz Unveils Electric G-Wagen Model
Equipped with 360-degree rotation and
off-road capabilities
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its new G-Class, the G-Wagen electric model, at Auto China in Beijing. Initially revealed as the ‘EQG Concept’ in September 2021 with no plans for mass production, the release of the teaser has confirmed its production.
In November 2022, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the prototype of the G-Wagen electric model. The long-awaited vehicle finally revealed its mass-production model at the Beijing Motor Show. Reportedly, the electric G-Class model has unique features, including producing an engine sound similar to the G500 with a V8 engine and a 360° rotation feature.
The engine sounds similar to an internal combustion engine
Able to rotate 360° up to twice
The electric G-Class model from Mercedes-Benz comes with a feature called G-Roar, which allows it to produce an engine sound similar to the G-Class internal combustion model. The engine sound changes depending on the drive mode. It makes a subdued sound in comfort mode, but it produces a powerful and emotional sound in sports mode. Additionally, various event sounds are implemented, such as an aura sound when unlocking the door and an aura sound that lasts one minute after locking.
The G-Turn feature, well-known since the prototype of the G-Class was unveiled, allows the vehicle to rotate 360° up to twice on unpaved surfaces. If there is enough flat space around, you can rotate by stepping on the brake pedal, switching the gear to D, activating the low-range off-road gear, and then
stepping on the accelerator pedal.
Navigation provides the optimal route
Storage box that replaces the spare tire
The navigation system built into the electric G-Class model is designed to alleviate range anxiety. When you set a destination, it plans the optimal route, considering charging capacity, payment features, terrain, surrounding temperature, and speed. Moreover, this navigation system adapts to the driver’s driving style and provides a customized route, considering the ever-changing traffic conditions.
The electric G-Class model can be fitted with a storage box in place of the spare tire in the conventional internal combustion G-Class model. This storage box, standard on the initial limited edition of the electric G-Class model, seems convenient for carrying charging cables or snow chains. Alternatively, you can keep the spare tire without installing the storage box.
With a wading depth of up to 85cm
and a 360° camera that alerts of obstacles
The electric G-Class model is equipped with excellent off-road capabilities. It boasts a maximum wading depth of 85cm, about 15cm deeper than the internal combustion models G550 and AMG G63. Moreover, it features a transparent hood function that uses a 360° camera to display hidden obstacles out of the driver’s sight and suggest optimal paths around them.
The electric G-Class model can adjust the gear reduction ratio to 2:1, allowing it to exert more torque with the low-range function. When this function is used, an intelligent off-road crawling function is automatically activated. Other features include the G-Steering function, which significantly reduces the turning radius by controlling individual driving torque while rotating around the inner rear wheel when performing a G turn.
