The fire broke out around 5:41 p.m. on July 10 in an apartment in Gimbae, South Gyeongsang Province. (Gimhaeseobu Fire Station)]A fifth grader prevented a potentially serious apartment fire by calmly using a fire extinguisher after noticing embers coming from an air conditioner’s electrical wiring, fire authorities said Tuesday.

The Gimhaeseobu Fire Station reported that the incident occurred around 5:41 p.m. on July 10 in an apartment in Gimbae, South Gyeongsang Province. The young boy, who was home alone at the time, noticed smoke and sparks emanating from the air conditioner. Acting quickly, he used a fire extinguisher that was readily available in the apartment to suppress the flames.

Officials commended the child’s prompt action, which they believe prevented significant damage to the property.

It was revealed that the boy had previously received training on how to use a fire extinguisher during a fire safety education session at his school. This incident highlights the importance of such programs, which are regularly conducted by local fire officials to equip students with essential skills for responding to fire emergencies.
