The Supreme Leader of Iran has urged Muslim countries to sever economic ties with Israel.

On the 5th (local time), the TASS Russian news agency reported that Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, had delivered this message to high-ranking officials in Muslim countries.

Khamenei said, “Politicians, scientists, and journalists from Muslim countries should urge their governments to deliver a powerful blow to the Zionist regime. This does not mean war, but cutting off economic relations with the Zionist regime.”

The Zionist regime refers to the current Israeli government. The tension in the Middle East has escalated as Iran and Israel physically clash following the outbreak of war between Israel and the armed Palestinian group Hamas.

Especially recently, the confrontation between the United States, which supports Israel, and pro-Iranian forces like the Houthi rebels has increased the concern of a conflict between the U.S. and Iran. Last week, the Iranian Foreign Ministry criticized the U.S. in a statement, saying, “The U.S. airstrikes against pro-Iranian forces in Iraq and Syria can only escalate regional tension and instability,” and called it a “strategic mistake by the U.S.”
