Renowned actor Andy Lau, recognized as one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Hong Kong cinema, has recently disclosed a startling detail about a kissing scene from his early career, causing quite a stir.
According to the foreign media outlet 8world on the 24th (local time), Andy Lau recently appeared on the variety show Infinity Beyond Class Season 2. During the show, he mentioned the first movie he made with director Wang Kar Wai, As Tears Go By. As Tears Go By, also known as Carmen of Mongkok, is a love story about a thug named Ah Wah (played by Andy Lau), who killed someone at 14, and Ah O (played by Maggie Cheung), whom he meets through a mutual friend.
Andy Lau reminisced about filming a kissing scene with Maggie Cheung. He recalled, “During the filming of a passionate kissing scene, I clumsily bumped into the leading lady’s front teeth.” The host asked, “Is it true that the leading lady’s front tooth broke while filming the kissing scene?” Andy Lau candidly admitted, “Yes, the leading lady whose tooth broke was Zhang Man Ok.”
As Tears Go By hit DVD shelves in June 1988, garnering nominations in 12 categories at the 25th Golden Horse Awards and the 8th Hong Kong Film Awards, it won the Best Art Director award at the latter ceremony. In 2005, the film earned a spot in the prestigious Top 100 Chinese-language Films list curated by the Hong Kong Film Awards Association.
