Actor Jang Dong Gun recently opened up about his drinking habits alongside his wife, Ko So Young, in a new video titled “How Top Actors Survive,” featuring fellow stars Sul Kyung Gu and Kim Hee Ae, released on the YouTube channel Zzanbro.
During the episode, the cast of the film A Normal Family discussed their drinking capacities. When Kim Hee Ae inquired about their alcohol tolerance, host Shin Dong Yeob remarked, “I find that 2 to 3 bottles of soju hit the spot. I eventually drift off if I listen to music and take my time. My drinking habit? It is to sleep.” Jang Dong Gun agreed, adding, “My drinking habit is also to sleep.”
Sitting nearby, Sul Kyung Gu said, “I just take a 10-minute nap and then drink again.” Jang Dong Gun recalled, “When I was younger, my nickname was Ten Minutes. I’d nap for 10 minutes and then start drinking again. I fall asleep without even realizing it, almost like I have narcolepsy.”
Jang Dong Gun also shared a funny anecdote involving Sul Kyung Gu. He recounted, “I didn’t even notice when I fell asleep during a difficult gathering with senior colleagues. I woke up to find myself resting on someone’s knee—it turned out to be Kyung Gu’s.” Shin Dong Yeob joked, “That must have been really annoying for you!” to which Sul Kyung Gu replied with a laugh, “It was! I couldn’t even get up to go to the bathroom.”
Shin Dong Yeob brought up Jang Dong Gun’s famous meme, “jjandeungun.” Jang Dong Gun explained, “At the Busan Film Festival, a reporter took a photo of us toasting, and my face got reflected in the glass, making my mouth look small.” Kim Hee Ae and Sul Kyung Gu burst into laughter upon seeing the photo.
When asked if he drinks often, Jang Dong Gun reflected, “I debuted in my early twenties and couldn’t handle alcohol back then, but I forced myself to drink. Over time, I got used to it, and now I really enjoy it.” When Shin Dong Yeob asked if his wife, Ko So Young, drinks more, Jang clarified, “Our styles are different. When my wife decides to drink, she really goes for it, often losing the next day to recovery. I prefer to have a little every day, even if it’s just at home.”
In 2020, Jang Dong Gun faced personal controversy when private messages with fellow actor Ju Jin Mo were leaked. The discussions, which included comments about women’s bodies, led to public criticism despite Jang being a victim of the leak. After taking a break from projects, he made his comeback with the film A Normal Family.
