In response to North Korea’s escalating threats including defining the inter-Korean relationship as ‘hostile’ and announcing the enhancement of strategic weapons and the additional launch of reconnaissance satellites, the South Korean Ministry of National Defense has taken a strong stand.

On the 31st, the Ministry of National Defense said in a statement regarding the North Korean Workers’ Party Plenary Meeting, “We strongly condemn North Korea for defining the inter-Korean relationship as hostile even to the point of a state of war, and for announcing that it will continue to provoke actions prohibited by the UN Security Council such as the enhancement of strategic weapons like nuclear and missiles and the additional launch of reconnaissance satellites through the Workers’ Party Plenary Meeting today.”

Adding, “North Korea is shifting the responsibility for the destruction of inter-Korean relations and the deterioration of the situation on the Korean Peninsula to us while ignoring the suffering and difficulties of its residents due to nuclear and missile development. This announcement by North Korea consistently shows the characteristics of a hereditary dictatorship that sacrifices everything for the succession of power and the maintenance of the regime.”

Furthermore, the Ministry of National Defense stated, “North Korea should immediately stop nuclear development which is unanimously opposed by the international community, and return to the path of denuclearization. This is the only way for North Korean residents to improve their lives and become a member of the international community.”

Continuing, “Our military will respond to any provocation from North Korea with a solid mental armament and a retaliatory posture of ‘immediate, strong, and to the end.’ If North Korea dares to contemplate using nuclear weapons against us, we will retaliate overwhelmingly using the enhanced extended deterrence of the strengthened U.S.-ROK alliance and the tri-axis system, and we warn that the Kim Jong-un regime will face its end.”
