Philippines to Open New Consulate in Busan, Boosting Ties with Korea

Philippine Ambassador to Korea Maria Theresa B. Dizon-De Vega emphasized the importance of people-to-people exchanges in strengthening bilateral ties with Korea during her speech in Seoul on June 23.

She made these remarks at the celebration of her country’s 127th Independence Day.

The Philippines, once a Spanish colony from 1571 to 1898, has developed deep historical and emotional connections with Korea. These bonds were forged through shared experiences in war and have since flourished through cultural, trade, and technological exchanges.

\”The Philippines and Korea have stood side by side as allies in times of adversity and as partners in progress,\” De Vega stated.

According to the United Nations Command, the Southeast Asian nation contributed 7,420 service members to support South Korea during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. This made the Philippines the fifth-largest troop contributor and the 11th nation to provide forces for South Korea. The Philippines suffered 448 casualties, including 92 soldiers killed in action and 356 wounded.

\”The sound of river water and the rustling of fallen leaves in the mountains… Isn’t it wonderful to see heaven and earth everywhere?\” De Vega reminisced about her time in Korea, quoting the Korean song \”Beautiful Country.\”

This song, which eloquently captures Korea’s four seasons, natural beauty, and the vibrant spirit of its people, is often played at national events to express hopes for unification. De Vega noted that the lyrics will always remind her of the essence of Korea after she completes her term in July.

She also highlighted one of the most significant projects of her tenure: the upcoming launch of the commemorative book, \”Dayo, Stories of Migration,\” in 2024.

The Filipino word \”dayo\” refers to a foreigner or someone visiting from another place.

De Vega encouraged the more than 65,000 Filipinos living in Korea to continue being a source of pride for their homeland.
\”To the Filipinos in Korea, may you continue to exemplify the professionalism, dedication, and warmth that Filipinos are known for around the world,\” she remarked.

\”We are preparing to open a Philippine Consulate General in Busan in the coming months,\” the ambassador announced. She highlighted recent agreements, naval collaboration, and youth engagement through sports and diplomacy.

The Philippines-Korea Free Trade Agreement enhances trade, investment, and innovation in key sectors. A recent memorandum of understanding signed during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting further strengthens these ties, according to the embassy.

The ambassador described 2025 and 2026 as pivotal years, emphasizing the importance of Philippines-Korea relations for inclusive and resilient growth. Korea is set to host APEC in 2025, while the Philippines will chair ASEAN in 2026.

The event showcased Tanduay Rhum, produced by one of the Philippines’ oldest distilleries. This rum has been the world’s top-selling brand for three consecutive years and ranks as the 7th largest spirits brand globally.
