Seoul sweltered through its ninth consecutive tropical night from Monday to Tuesday, the National Weather Service reported. Forecasters predict the capital’s daytime temperatures could soar to a scorching 36°C (96.8°F).
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Seoul’s overnight low bottomed out at a steamy 26.9°C (80.4°F). Meteorologists classify a “tropical night” as one where temperatures fail to dip below 25°C (77°F) between 6:01 p.m. and 9 a.m. the following morning.
Meanwhile, the coastal city of Gangneung on the east coast finally caught a break after eight straight tropical nights. Temperatures there dipped to a relatively cool 24.9°C (76.8°F) at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday. The weather service noted that a shift in wind patterns has brought some relief to the east coast, slightly tempering the intense heat wave.
However, the rest of the country wasn’t so lucky. Major cities including Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Daejeon all endured yet another stifling tropical night between Monday and Tuesday, the agency reported. (Yonhap)
