We’re not just memorizing definitions here – we’re challenging you to actually use these sophisticated words in real life.

<언어, 의사소통>1. tacit [tǽsit] – The silent agreement

Sharing roots with “taciturn,” this word is all about what’s left unsaid. It’s the art of understanding without spelling it out.

Despite not yet having signed the contract, both parties had reached a
tacit understanding on the key terms and conditions.
Translation: No signatures needed – they were on the same page without saying a word.
Pro tip: Choosing not to appeal a verdict? That’s basically a
tacit
admission of guilt.

2. valediction [væ̀lədíkʃən] – The grand goodbye
This isn’t just any farewell – it’s the speech that caps off your academic journey. In the U.S., it’s usually delivered by the valedictorian, AKA the class superstar.
She graduated as the top student in her class and was honored to deliver the
valediction at her graduation.
Translation: She aced her way to the top and got to drop the mic at graduation.

Fun fact: Even prime ministers get in on the valediction action. The outgoing PM’s
valediction
was a real tearjerker – sincere and straight from the heart.

1. engross [inɡróus] – The ultimate attention-grabber
Think “gross” as in “total,” and you’re on the right track. When you’re engrossed, you’re all in – 100% focused.
I became so thoroughly
engrossed
in the fascinating novel that I lost track of time and forgot to pick my son up from soccer practice.

Translation: That book was so good, I ghosted my own kid’s soccer practice!
Speaking of being all in, my Canadian college buddy is so
engrossed
in Korean Buddhism, he’s ready to trade his jeans for monk robes.

2. proponent [prəpóunənt] – The cheerleader

This word’s got “pro” written all over it. A proponent is your idea’s biggest fan, ready to shout it from the rooftops.
Proponents
of the government’s new construction project say it will help conserve water and save costs.Translation: The project’s fan club is all about those water-saving, money-saving vibes.

Hot topic alert: Government construction projects can turn into verbal boxing matches.
Proponents
and opponents recently went toe-to-toe for three hours!3. vouch [váutʃ] – The ultimate seal of approval

Think of it as putting your reputation on the line for someone. It’s like being a character witness, but cooler. The senior partner had known Mike since he was a boy and would
vouch
for him without hesitation.

Translation: Mike’s got a lifetime VIP pass in the senior partner’s book.

Word to the wise: Just because you collected the data doesn’t mean you have to
vouch
for its accuracy. Sometimes, you gotta keep your hands clean!
