Secrets to Smaller Pores: How to Shrink Those Troublesome Spots

The Causes of Enlarged Pores: Sebum

Pores are the openings of hair follicles. These openings are connected to sebaceous glands, which secrete oily sebum. In our younger years, these pores are narrow because sebum production is low. However, as we hit puberty, sebum production increases, leading to the enlargement of pores. As we age, the collagen and elastin surrounding our pores decrease, reducing skin elasticity and causing our pores to enlarge. So, how can we reduce the size of these pores?

Reducing Pore Size 1: Addressing Sebum Production

Before the elasticity around the pores decreases with age, sebum is the main factor influencing pore size. Therefore, it’s essential to keep sebum production in check. Those with oily skin types often have enlarged pores and conditions such as sebaceous hyperplasia, where the skin surface appears bumpy due to excess sebum. Hence, controlling and reducing sebum production is crucial to prevent pore enlargement.

Reducing Pore Size 2: Methods to Reduce Sebum

One method to reduce sebum is by taking isotretinoin, a medication. However, it can worsen conditions for those planning to get pregnant, those with rosacea, or those with atopic dermatitis. Thus, selecting healthy cosmetics with ingredients that won’t clog pores and applying them frequently is better. After reducing sebum production, tightening the skin around the pores is essential. You might consider getting a procedure that can help tighten the pores.

Reducing Pore Size 3: Maintaining Low Sebum Production

Once treated, pores can enlarge again. If sebum production increases due to various external factors and continues to increase, pores can enlarge again. If sebum is occupying the inside of the pores, it’s essential to cleanse to ensure all sebum is removed thoroughly.

Cleansing oils can effectively remove oil-based cosmetics and impurities. After using a cleansing oil, don’t rinse immediately with water. Instead, gently massage your hands to emulsify the oil, then cleanse with a foam cleanser and rinse with water.
