Surprising Connection Between Vitamin C and Skin Tone

Why Does Your Skin Turn Yellow After Eating a Lot of Tangerines?

It’s well-known that vitamin C is beneficial for the skin. Foods rich in vitamin C include tangerines, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes. But have you ever noticed your skin turning yellow after consuming these foods in large quantities for skin care? Let’s explore the benefits of vitamin C for the skin and why it can cause your face to turn yellow.

Why is Vitamin C Good for the Skin?

Foods rich in vitamin C include lemons, oranges, and tomatoes. Our skin can appear darker due to oxidation, and vitamin C has an antioxidant effect that can restore oxidized elements, resulting in a skin whitening effect. It also plays an anti-aging role and can prevent aging. Aging is caused by active oxygen, which can be neutralized by antioxidants such as vitamin C and glutathione. Thirdly, it aids in collagen production, essential for skin elasticity. It also has anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects.

What Determines Skin Color?

We often stock up and consume fruits rich in vitamin C, such as tangerines and mangoes. However, instead of seeing a whitening effect, your skin may become duller and darker. Our skin color is primarily brown due to melanin, which is produced by exposure to sunlight. Secondly, our skin can appear red due to blood vessels, and lastly, it can turn yellow. This yellowing can occur due to jaundice or carotenemia, which can occur when certain foods are consumed.

Does Consuming Vitamin C Turn Your Face Yellow?

Some fruits and vegetables are rich in beta-carotene, which can induce a yellow tone. If your blood tests are normal, but your face has a yellow hue, carotenemia is possible. Consuming large quantities of fruits and vegetables rich in beta-carotene can increase its levels in the blood, causing your skin to turn yellow. For instance, excessive amounts of tomatoes, carrots, pumpkins, spinach, tangerines, and sweet potatoes can cause this. Beta-carotene is a nutrient beneficial for health, but consuming it excessively can turn your skin yellow, so it is best to finish it in moderation.
