Venice Cracks Down on Tourism: No More Loudspeakers, No More Crowds

Venice, a globally renowned tourist destination representing Italy, will prohibit loudspeakers and group tourists starting from June this year. 

Foreign media outlets, including the BBC and The Guardian, report that Venice is implementing new regulations to address the challenges posed by overwhelming tourism in the city.

Starting in June, these regulations will come into effect within the city center and on the islands of Murano, Burano, and Torcello in Venice. The measures aim to restrict large tourist groups exceeding 25 people and prohibit the use of loudspeakers that contribute to noise and confusion.

Elisabetta Pesce, the city official responsible for security, remarked, “This decision is aimed at safeguarding our residents and ensuring the safety of visitors exploring our city.”

Venice has a history of implementing regulations to combat overtourism. In September of last year, the city introduced a system requiring tourists to pay a tourism tax of 5 euros (approximately $5.50).

Simone Venturini, a Venice City Councillor, expressed, “By implementing a range of initiatives, we aim to enhance Venice’s tourism and promote sustainable travel.”
