Japanese Man Hospitalized After 10 Years in Same Underwear

Man Who Wore the Same Underwear for Over a Decade:
Suffers From Respiratory Distress due to Buttock Bleeding and Pus
Diagnosed with Chronic Perianal pyoderma
Underwent Skin Graft Surgery

Recently, medical staff at a Japanese self-governing university hospital reported that a Japanese man visited the emergency room due to worsening respiratory distress.

He suffered from respiratory distress due to widespread nodules on his buttocks and perianal pyoderma. He confessed to having worn the same unwashed underwear for over a decade and not bathing regularly.

Instead of washing the pus that formed on his buttocks, he put a towel inside his underwear and replaced it as needed, and only occasionally showered to wash off the pus and blood from his buttocks.

He wore the same pair of underwear for over a decade without showering and suffered from skin lesions that caused bleeding and pus on his buttocks for four years.

He even struggled with respiratory distress during the winter for the past two years and found it difficult to ride a bicycle due to pain in his buttocks.

Upon examining his buttock skin at the hospital, they found abscesses, fistulas, and dark, hardened nodules with a mixture of blood and pus on both sides of his buttocks.

As a result, he was diagnosed with systemic hypertensive heart disease, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, anemia, and extensive chronic perianal pyoderma.

Ultimately, the medical team excised and removed the skin and subcutaneous tissue on the surface of his buttocks and performed a skin graft surgery.

The patient fully recovered about six months later. The medical team stated, “This case shows that wearing unhygienic underwear and sitting for long periods can lead to chronic perianal pyoderma,” and warned, “There is also a risk of it worsening into squamous cell carcinoma, so caution is needed.”
