Mercedes G-Wagen Made of Wood? How One Dad Crafted it for His Kid

Surprisingly all wood
Capable of driving on the road

The Wooden G-Wagen

The G-Class is Mercedes-Benz’s off-road SUV model. This model, known as the G-Wagen, captivates consumers with its high off-road driving performance and masculine design. From the vertical grille to Mercedes-Benz’s iconic triangular star, luxurious design elements, a boxy body shape, and the strong appearance of angular lines coexist.

However, with a starting price of $150,000, the car remains a dream for many, as its high cost makes it difficult to purchase. One man created his own G-Wagen out of wood and drove it around, making it a huge topic of discussion.

Stripped Down an Old Mitsubishi Pajero to Its Chassis

A Vietnamese YouTuber set out to make a G-Wagen out of wood. The YouTuber began making the vehicle himself to give his son the car he wanted as a gift. Mitsubishi’s old Pajero was used to create a wooden G-Wagen. First, to remove the Pajero’s chassis, he tore off the door and all of the body panels.

Using tools, he methodically removed the connected bolts one by one, starting with the bonnet and door. Next, he took out the interior seats, revealing the empty cabin as he removed the passenger and driver seats. After that, he detached the bumper and side steps. Finally, the man began to tear off the body panels manually.

Overall skeleton reconstruction

The welded body parts were cut directly with a grinder, and the steering wheel and dashboard inside were all removed. After the first work was completed, only some of the car body’s skeleton remained. The man began to reconstruct the car body frame by welding aluminum pipes. A delicate process was carried out to create the G-Wagen’s unique angular and boxy shape.

On the completed framework, wooden parts processed into the same shape as the car body panels began to be attached one by one. The front lip, bumper, bonnet, pillars, and roof are all made of wooden panels. After connecting the wooden panels with screws, the work began to trim the exterior to resemble a real car using a chainsaw. Afterward, the delicate lines of the headlamp and bonnet were refined using a grinder.

The interior is also made of wood

After creating the exterior shape by attaching the doors, the center console, dashboard, seats, and wheel covers were all made using wood crafts. The display, windshield, headlamps, and side mirrors were attached, and a vehicle similar to the actual G-Wagen was created. The existing Pajero’s drivetrain was not touched, so actual driving was possible.

Although it would be difficult to achieve the performance of a real car since it is made of wood, a man drove his son and daughter in a wooden G-Wagen on the surrounding roads.
