Shrimp Alert: Parts You Should Never Eat!

Shrimp, known for their delicious taste and versatile cooking methods, is a nutritious protein-rich seafood.

However, a warning post about eating shrimp was uploaded to the Soha website.

According to the post, there are specific shrimp parts you should avoid eating, no matter how tempting they might be.

First up is the shrimp’s head. Many believe the shrimp’s head and eyes are nutritious, but experts disagree.

They explain that the shrimp’s head has almost no nutritional value and contains organs most likely to harbor disease-causing bacteria and parasites.

Next is the shrimp’s shell. Like the head, people often think the shrimp’s shell is rich in calcium.

However, the shell’s main component is chitin, which is very difficult to digest and only adds stress to the stomach without aiding calcium absorption.

Lastly, the greenish-black vein on the back of the shrimp is better removed before cooking. This part is the shrimp’s digestive tract, which includes the stomach and intestine. While generally harmless, and bacteria are destroyed at high temperatures during cooking, it is safer and improves texture by removing it before processing.

When using shrimp in broths, it’s best to use just the body, removing the head and tail. It’s particularly risky to eat shrimp that have been dead for a long time, to consume large quantities at once, or to eat them raw. These practices should be avoided.
