Toyota’s Hilux GR Sport II: The Good, The Bad, and The Pricey

Scheduled to be launched later this year
Hilux GR Sport II
Price disclosure continues to disappoint customers

Toyota’s Hilux pickup truck, produced in 1968, is so loved that it was selected as the best-selling pickup in the world. This model is popular because everyone considers it appropriate for its traction and size.

Hilux, which considers being appropriate as its most significant advantage, is trying to emphasize high performance with the GR Sport II. In the fall of 2023, Toyota introduced its high-performance pickup as the best-driving Hilux of all time, raising expectations. However, contrary to the aspirations, there are some disappointing aspects, and netizens’ reactions are mixed.

Show amazing abilities

Most GR models focus on performance, but the Hilux GR Sport II doesn’t follow that. Since it is equipped with the familiar 2.8L turbo diesel engine that produces 201 horsepower and 50.9 kg.m of torque, most reviews say it is the exact opposite. However, when it comes to towing capacity, which is most important, it reaches 3,500 kg (7,716 lbs), the highest level in its class.

In reality, performance is inferior compared to the Ford Ranger Raptor equipped with EcoBoost. However, Toyota is introducing the GR Sports II as the Hilux, which has the best driving performance ever, thanks to improved handling characteristics such as a wider track, higher ride height, reduced roll angle, and more precise steering response. In fact, in the case of this model, the ride height has been increased by 20 mm (0.78 inches), and the track has been increased by up to 150 mm (5.9 inches).

Showcasing a design that matches its robust performance

Upgrades were made not only in performance but also in design. This Toyota pickup is equipped with larger front and rear discs instead of drums, and a suspension with a monotube damper has also been added. Additionally, an aggressive front fascia and a black mesh grille with Toyota lettering match the sporty front bumper and silver skid plate.

In addition, various black parts stand out, from black fender flares to aero sports bars, mirrors, and door handles. This Hilux has all-terrain tires and 17-inch alloy wheels installed, so Toyota took care of both performance and design.

Interior is satisfying
Disappointing in terms of price

The dark theme of black leather and suede sports seats with silver contrast stitching is also applied to the vehicle’s interior. The GR logo, red seat belt, and aluminum pedals are also provided. In terms of functions, there is a 9-speaker JBL premium audio system and an 8-inch infotainment system that supports wired Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay.

This Hilux GR Sport II is priced at around £49,750 (approx. $62,330), which can be a burden. It is scheduled to be sold in the UK market starting this year’s end. In the UK, people are expressing dissatisfaction with the higher-than-expected price. As a change in tax policy for pickup trucks is scheduled in the UK, interest is growing in whether Toyota will announce another change.
