A Mysterious Coupe Spotted Online?
BMW’s design distinguishes itself from other car brands, solidifying its essential role in both performance and the history of automobile design. The brand has retained traditional design elements like the iconic front kidney grille and the Hofmeister kink in its new models, offering a sense of continuity that fans enjoy discovering.
Recently, BMW’s design direction has taken a more adventurous and polarizing turn, creating a split in public opinion. The anticipation is building for the vehicles to be released on the next-generation platform, Neue Klasse, which promises to introduce unprecedented designs that spark curiosity and excitement. Adding to the intrigue, a mysterious BMW coupe was recently spotted overseas, prompting a closer look at its detailed design.
A 2-Door Coupe Based on M2
Resembling BMW’s First Coupe 02
First, the model is a rendering based on the M2 and 2 series. Overseas private car designer Lucas Wenchofer created a vehicle named BMW’s 03 Coupe. The model is similar to the 02 series, a high-performance compact coupe that BMW launched in 1966 and produced until 1976.
The 02 series marked BMW’s first foray into the entry-level coupe market, eventually spawning various derivative models, including convertibles and hatchbacks. The series included three models — the 1602, 1802, and 2002 — differentiated by engine displacement. The most renowned of these is the 2002 model. This series laid the groundwork for BMW’s most iconic line, the 3 Series, serving as its predecessor and shaping the brand’s future direction in sporty, compact vehicles.
Balanced Design with Neue Klasse in Mind
Let’s get back to the rendering. The vehicle features a masculine appearance with a low silhouette and thick fenders. The headlamps and tail lamps are particularly noticeable, and the straight LED tail lights show a future-oriented appearance.
In particular, the size of the kidney grille has been noticeably reduced, harkening back to BMBMW’s earlier days. The 3-box design ratio is also emphasized, creating a balanced appearance. The designer also added that he designed the vehicle to be similar in size to the M2M2’s Overall length, making it compatible with the Neue Klasse architecture.
Similar to the Recently Revealed Concept Skytop, But Unlikely to Actually Launch
In the rendering of the BMW 03 Coupe, features that mirror the recently unveiled Concept Skytop, which has attracted considerable attention, are apparent in several areas, suggesting the potential for its actual production. While the Skytop is based on the 8 Series, the 03 Coupe is derived from the 2 Series. Despite these differences in their base models, the 03 Coupe is particularly significant as it underscores a key element of BMW’s broader coupe strategy. This alignment indicates a cohesive BMBMBMW’soupeesignn in BMW’s coupe design and development.
However, despite the potential release of the BMW 03 Coupe, it is unlikely to feature the smaller, more balanced kidney grille that some fans may desire. This is due to the design ethos established by the Neue Klasse platform, which indicates that future vehicles, including the 03 Coupe, will likely have a front grille the same size or larger than those seen on current models.
