Volvo’s flagship large sedan, the S90, stands out with a distinctive luxury that differentiates it from BMW’s 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class. Its blend of practical yet luxurious interiors, reflecting Nordic sensibility, is a unique strength that clearly distinguishes it from other high-end models.

The S90 is poised to play a crucial role in Volvo’s transition to electrification with an upcoming version known as the ES90. As anticipation builds, automotive rendering specialists have released their interpretations of the ES90. Let’s take a closer look at what the ES90 might look like based on these renderings.

What kind of performance can we expect from the ES90?
The specifications show little difference from the internal combustion engine

Let’s take a quick look at the upcoming ES90. Set to be produced in China, this model will use Volvo’s dedicated electric vehicle platform, SPA2. The ES90 will feature a spacious interior, short overhangs, and a long wheelbase. Buyers can choose a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version or a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version.

Based on the single-motor model, the ES90 will come with a 111 kWh battery, which is expected to offer a driving range of up to 600 km (373 miles) on a single charge. In terms of dimensions, it will measure 4,990 mm (196.5 inches) in length, 1,945 mm (76.6 inches) in width, 1,547 mm (60.9 inches) in height, and have a wheelbase of 3,102 mm (122.1 inches). These specifications are pretty similar to those of the internal combustion engine S90. Now, let’s examine the exterior changes as depicted in the renderings.

Maintaining Volvo’s signature design
The lowered roofline at the rear catches the eye

Starting with the front, which is most noticeable, we can see the same bumper and logo as Volvo’s electric models. You can also see the application of Volvo’s iconic Thor’s Hammer DRL, and you can also feel some of the appearance of the EX90 electric SUV. The wheels remain the same as those used on Volvo’s electric vehicles.

Let’s take a look at the side and rear. The door handles have disappeared for aerodynamic reasons, making it look much cleaner. The roofline comes down more smoothly than the existing sedan, giving it the feel of a fastback sedan. The rear is also not very different from the existing model, and it preserves Volvo’s identity well.

No prototypes have been spotted yet
Scheduled to debut in mid-2025

Since there hasn’t been any news about a prototype or test vehicle yet, it’s hard to pinpoint the exact appearance of the ES90 before it officially debuts. However, we can expect its design to feature a minimalist and luxurious aesthetic, closely following the layout seen in the EX90.

Direct competitors are likely to be BMW’s all-electric i5 sedan, Mercedes-Benz’s EQE, Audi’s A6, and the Tesla Model S. Meanwhile, the official debut and production of the Volvo ES90 is expected around 2025.
