California Police Frustrated by Tesla Model 3: Too Cramped, Not Practical

Model 3 Selected as Police Vehicle
Faces Criticism for Numerous Shortcomings
Officers and Public Voice Growing Concerns

NBC 7 San Diego

The Tesla Model 3, recently adopted as a police vehicle by various departments in California, is encountering significant criticism regarding its suitability for law enforcement duties. As American police forces trend toward eco-friendly options, the Model 3 has replaced the now-discontinued Dodge Charger, a staple in police fleets.

However, officers are expressing concerns about the Model 3’s practicality. Key issues include inconvenient charging due to inadequate infrastructure, cramped interior space, and high equipment costs. The limited interior has been highlighted as a particularly pressing problem.

Transporting criminals in cramped spaces is inconvenient
Limitations revealed in various situations

While the Dodge Charger could comfortably seat two officers in the back, the Model 3 can accommodate only one individual, complicating situations involving multiple suspects. This limitation means that additional vehicles and officers must be dispatched in instances of numerous arrests, stretching resources thin.

Furthermore, the Model 3’s low ride height poses challenges during pursuits. Officers have reported difficulties navigating curbs or rough terrain, hindering their ability to chase suspects effectively. Public concern is growing over how these limitations might affect police responsiveness in critical situations.

Ditch the Model 3 and look for another vehicle

Additional issues arise from the car’s design and technology. Officers have noted that wearing full gear, including belts and bulletproof vests, can be cumbersome in the cramped passenger area. Features such as autopilot and proximity locks can also malfunction, further complicating operations.

Despite these challenges, California’s recent executive orders mandate increased municipal use of electric vehicles. Consequently, police departments are actively searching for alternatives to the Model 3.

In the search for a more suitable vehicle, the Ford F-150 Lightning has emerged as a leading contender. Based on the popular F-150, this electric pickup truck offers easier access to parts and service, making it a more manageable option for police departments. Several companies are already poised to convert the Lightning into police vehicles, a flexibility that Tesla does not currently provide.

Moreover, Dodge announced plans to release an electric charger, which is expected to find its way into police fleets soon. Meanwhile, Tesla continues to develop its vehicles, with recent updates regarding the facelifted Highland model of the Model 3 beginning to roll out this April.
