Tesla’s New Model Y Juniper Prototype Spotted in China
Renderings Offer Sneak Peek at the Facelift
Tesla’s popular Model Y continues to dominate the market, with 13,672 units sold in South Korea from January to September. As Tesla’s best-selling vehicle, the Model Y is now set for a refresh, with a new model expected in 2025 under the name “Project Juniper.” A prototype, reportedly leaked from Tesla’s Shanghai factory, has surfaced before its official launch, sparking significant interest. Renderings based on the prototype are also making waves online.
Split Lamp Design Hints at Major Updates
The leaked prototype’s lamp design appears split into upper and lower parts. Though the prototype is heavily camouflaged, the upper lamp can be seen lighting up separately. Also, leaked images suggest that the rear will feature horizontal strip-style tail lamps.
Speculation is growing that horizontal daytime running lights will be positioned along the top of the front fascia, similar to Hyundai’s Horizon design. The rendering reflects this by showing daytime running lights extending down the bonnet’s parting line. Tesla has also retained the trapezoidal air intake design at the center of the bumper.
Sleeker Air Intakes and Redesigned Rear Lights
The new Model Y’s air intake design has also changed, now featuring a sleeker ㄱ shape that adds a sporty touch. Before the prototype was leaked, most expected the front headlights to adopt a sharper look, similar to the new Model 3. However, the split lamp design confirms that the refreshed Model Y will see more significant changes than anticipated.
At the rear, the previously leaked images indicate the addition of a thick, bar-shaped tail lamp with Tesla’s lettering prominently displayed in the center. The top section of the tailgate is adorned with black garnish, where a small camera is embedded. These details are also captured in the rendering.
Interior Updates: Enhanced Lighting and a Larger Display
On the inside, the refreshed Model Y is expected to feature several updates, including ambient lighting along the door trim, a redesigned steering wheel, and a larger 15.4-inch display. Leaked images suggest a ㄷ-shaped graphic design for the interior, with some elements carrying over from the current Model Y.
Though Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated no plans to release the new Model Y this year, the development seems to be progressing. Tesla recently faced criticism following the unveiling of its robotaxi, prompting speculation that the company will now shift its focus back to finalizing the Model Y refresh ahead of its anticipated 2025 release.
