Visitors take a selfie at the A touring exhibition showcasing Korean webtoons has made its debut in Cairo, Egypt’s capital, kicking off the first of five planned stops through October.

The K-Comics World exhibition opened its doors on July 1 at the Korean Cultural Center in Cairo’s trendy Dokki district, as reported by the Korea Creative Content Agency on Monday.

The Cairo leg of the tour puts the spotlight on “Hellbound,” a gripping webtoon created by Choi Gyu-seok and filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho from 2019 to 2020. This title skyrocketed to global fame with its Netflix adaptation in 2021, directed by Yeon himself, landing a coveted spot in the streamer’s top 10 list across more than 80 regions. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of “Hellbound” by walking through life-size panels, striking a pose in specially designed photo zones, and collecting stamps tied to key chapters from the comic.

The Cairo exhibition is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will run until July 31.

After Cairo, the exhibition will jet-set to Budapest, Hungary’s vibrant capital, then to Ottawa, Canada’s charming capital in Ontario, followed by a stop in the bustling metropolis of Shanghai in September. The tour will wrap up with a grand finale in Osaka, Japan, in October. Each city will shine a spotlight on a different webtoon and host a variety of interactive events, including artist workshops and exclusive autograph sessions, as announced by KOCCA.

The agency sees this tour as a golden opportunity to test the waters for Korean content in the Middle East and Africa, while fine-tuning their localization strategies for future rollouts. KOCCA has also pledged ongoing support for Korean webtoon creators looking to make their mark on the global stage.

“This isn’t just about putting content on display — it’s about striking a chord with readers worldwide and paving the way for Korean webtoons to take the global market by storm,” enthused Lee Hyun-joo, head of KOCCA’s content and intellectual property division. “We’re all in when it comes to helping Korean comics expand their global footprint and ensuring our talented creators have every opportunity to shine on the world stage.”
