As the conflict in Ukraine enters its third year, both nations’ leaders remain resolute in their determination, expressing their commitment to achieving victory in the coming year.

Zelensky’s Address of Resilience and Determination

In a New Year’s television address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky conveyed a message of resilience and determination, as reported by AFP on December 31. He emphasized the nation’s collective effort and perseverance throughout 2023, declaring their unwavering resolve to rise again, regardless of the number of missiles launched by their adversaries.

President Zelensky confidently stated, “And next year, the enemy will feel the wrath of domestic production. Our weapons, our equipment, artillery, our shells, our drones, our naval “greetings” to the enemy, and at least a million Ukrainian FPV drones.”

Additionally, President Zelensky expressed gratitude to Ukraine’s “partners” for acquiring a range of advanced military equipment in the past year. This included Patriots, IRIS-T, HIMARS, NASAMS, Hawk, Abrams, Leopards, and numerous other assets bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities. President Zelensky noted, “And our pilots are already mastering F-16 jets, and we will definitely see them in our skies.”

In his address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the strength and resilience of the Ukrainian people, stating that they are more formidable than any schemes or efforts aimed at undermining global solidarity and alliances.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also pledged victory. In his TV speech, he said, “We have repeatedly proved that we can solve the most difficult tasks and will never back down.”

He particularly thanked the soldiers in the battle, praising them as “heroes” performing their duties on the front lines who “fight for truth and justice.” He reflected on the significant historical juncture his nation is facing. Also, he emphasized the government’s dedication to fostering the motherland’s assured growth and enhancing the well-being of its citizens, affirming their commitment to becoming stronger.

On December 29, ahead of the New Year, Russia carried out its largest airstrike on Ukraine since the invasion, firing 122 missiles and deploying 36 drones. According to the Ukrainian military, at least 144 people were injured, and 30 civilians were killed in the 18 hours after the attack began. Major facilities, including maternity hospitals, apartment complexes, and schools, were reportedly destroyed.

Ukraine retaliated the next day with an airstrike on the Russian border city of Belgorod. Russia subsequently demanded a UN Security Council meeting, accusing Ukraine of using cluster bombs, which are prohibited by international law, during the airstrike.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden addressed the urgency of the situation in Ukraine and warned that without prompt emergency action from Congress in the new year, the United States would be unable to provide Ukraine with the necessary weapons and air defense systems. He urged Congress to expedite the passage of aid legislation to meet these critical needs.
