The three countries of Korea, the U.S., and Japan held a foreign ministers’ meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They discussed trilateral cooperation and key regional and global issues.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the 23rd, Minister Cho Tae Yul, Secretary Blinken, and Minister Kamikawa held a trilateral foreign ministers’ meeting for an hour starting at 1:15 p.m. in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where the main G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was held.

This trilateral foreign ministers’ meeting is the seventh since the inauguration of the Yoon Suk Yeol government. It is held about three months after the APEC Ministerial Meeting in November last year.

The three ministers evaluated that trilateral security cooperation to effectively respond to North Korea’s escalating nuclear and missile threats has been dramatically strengthened. Based on last year’s achievements, such as the operation of the North Korean missile warning information real-time sharing system, they decided to strengthen the three countries’ response capacity this year.

In addition, they decided to strengthen cooperation between the three countries further to block funds for nuclear and missile activities, including North Korea’s illegal cyber activities, and to promote human rights in North Korea.

The three ministers emphasized that military cooperation between Russia and North Korea poses a serious threat to international peace and stability beyond the Korean Peninsula and decided to continue to respond sternly in cooperation with the international community.

The three ministers strongly urged North Korea to “immediately stop its bellicose rhetoric and provocations and return to the path of denuclearization.”

This year, as the three countries are serving as members of the Security Council for the first time in 27 years, they decided to cooperate more closely to address various regional and global challenges, including the North Korean issue.
