A Somali man has been revealed to have strangled his pregnant girlfriend to death in what is being termed an “honor killing.”April 4il 4, The Sun reported that the man, ashamed to introduce his girlfriend to his Muslim family, murdered Saga Elenborg, a 20-year-old Swedish woman.

The woman was found dead in her home in Sweden last year. At the time of discovery, she was seven months pregnant, and the fetus had also died in her womb.

The suspect, her boyfriend, was charged with murder last week for his girlfriend’s death. The fetus, although nearing full term at around 3.74 pounds, wasn’t included in the charges.

Raised in a family with strict cultural views against interracial dating, the suspect kept his relationship with the victim secret for two years. When the pregnancy came to light, he pressured her to terminate it, then threatened to expose their relationship and child to his disapproving family. Shortly after this message, the victim was tragically found dead.

Last week, police released documents containing images of the victim’s bedroom, the crime scene, and an object believed to be the murder weapon.

Prosecutors allege Elizabeth Anderson claims the suspect suffocated the victim by applying pressure to her neck, cutting off blood flow. This, they believe, constitutes an honor killing motivated by the desire to protect the perceived honor of the suspect and his family. The victim, reportedly thrilled about becoming a mother, was preparing for the baby’s arrival. Despite pleading not guilty, the defendant faces trial on April 10. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
