Hyundai’s Veloster Successor Rendering Stirs Controversy with Elantra-like Design

Designer’s Veloster
Attracts Attention with Elantra Coupe-like Appearance
Netizens’ reactions are mixed

Veloster, a compact hatchback model produced by Hyundai from 2011 to 2022, attracted attention with its sporty configuration and power performance. However, it could not overcome the limitations of hatchbacks, and it was discontinued first in South Korea and later followed the same path in North America.

Some also expressed disappointment with the Veloster. Hyundai also evaluated it as an unconventional attempt due to its aggressive shape and design, which contrasted with its compact size. Recently, rendering designer The Ottle has become a hot topic, revealing a rendering that imagines Veloster’s successor model.

Reflecting Hyundai’s Latest Design
Seems to Refer to Elantra’s Design

The design appears to reference Hyundai’s latest design language, and the body is based on the sculptural image of the 2013 Audi Sport Quattro Concept. In the newly designed Veloster, the coupe lines were emphasized along with the hatchback style. The front part references several Hyundai models and is remarkably similar to the Elantra (Avante for the South Korean market).

Because of this, some people thought it would feel the same way if the Elantra Coupe was rereleased rather than the Veloster. Let’s examine what it was like and why it elicited such a reaction. First of all, the front grill seems to have been borrowed from the design of the new Elantra CN7. The same glossy black parametric jewel pattern was applied.

Sharp Headlamps
Aggressive Rear Design

The headlamp was connected to the bonnet, and a shape that extended sharply to the side was applied. In addition, you can see that the trapezoid-shaped air intake on the bumper’s side is the same as that of the Elantra. Although the size was increased to fit the extended sideline, Elantra’s design elements were applied in several places.

At the rear, a tail lamp with T-shaped internal graphics was placed. This design emphasizes the horizontal shape across the tailgate. The tailgate was reduced in size to match the changed rear line, and the lower bumper protruded aggressively to emphasize the sporty look. A chrome garnish was added to the bottom.

Over-Reflection of Elantra Design

Veloster has asymmetric doors in a 2+1 configuration, but the 2-door form was applied in the predictive rendering. As it was one of the Veloster’s identities, it is somewhat disappointing that it was not used. Although we must consider that the designer’s imagination is reflected, it seems complicated to avoid the feeling that it has become an Elantra coupe by overly reflecting the Elantra’s design.
