Flights to and from Jeju, including Jeju Airport, were canceled in droves due to deteriorating weather at domestic airports and the discovery of a suspicious object suspected to be an explosive at Gwangju Airport.

According to the Korea Airports Corporation’s Jeju Airport on the 19th, as of 7 PM that day, 141 domestic flights (78 arrivals, 63 departures) were canceled. In addition, 132 domestic flights (65 arrivals, 67 departures) and 8 international flights (4 arrivals, 4 departures) were delayed.

Delays and cancellations occurred throughout the afternoon, and virtually all flights departing and arriving at Jeju Airport were canceled after 6 PM.

A unique cloud altitude (cloud height) report is in effect at Jeju Airport. This special report is issued when the height of the clouds is expected to be below the standard.

An official from Jeju Airport explained, “Cancellations occurred due to the worsening weather at Wonju and Gunsan Airports, as well as the discovery of a suspicious object suspected to be an explosive at Gwangju Airport, not just in Jeju Airport.”

Currently, some tourists and locals who are trying to book flights for the next day remain at Jeju Airport, and it is reported that there are no other stayers.

Earlier that day, around 1:50 PM, a suspicious postal box suspected to be an explosive was found in the post office inside the Air Force’s 1st Combat Wing in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, leading to the cancellation of civilian aircraft at Gwangju Airport, which shares the runway, as the runway and other key military airport facilities were under control.
